Ghanaian Bunker Supplier Calls for Tighter Regulation in West Africa
David Amebele, Managing Director of Ghanaian bunker supplier Inter Maritime Services has called on the government for tighter regulation of the bunker industry in West Africa, local media reports.
Regulation of the industry will encourage ship owners to have confidence in bunkering service providers, he said.
Amebele also called the government to involve ship management experts in the bunkering business, and to allow indigenous bunkering companies to have direct access to gas and oil from the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
According to the report, prior to the early 1990s bunkering services were predominantly handled by multinational oil companies, including Shell Ghana, Total Ghana, Mobil Oil, and Elf.
However since the late 1990s more indigenous companies, such as Inter Maritime Services, have entered the market.
