BMT SMART (BMT), a vessel performance management subsidiary of BMT Group, has announced the installation of its vessel performance monitoring system onboard two Minerva Marine Inc. (Minerva Marine) chemical tankers, Minerva Leo and Minerva Tychi.

"BMT has been able to offer a comprehensive package that can fully support our efforts to monitor daily operational costs and optimise fleet performance," said Maria Tsobanoglou, New Buildings and S&P Senior Engineer at Minerva.

BMT's monitoring system is said to bring together data collected automatically from the navigation and automation systems onboard, with data that is on shore, such as Hindcast Metocean data.

Using BMT’s web-based SMARTFLEET application, Minerva Marine can then analyse factors affecting the vessel performance.

The system is also said to enable personnel onshore to make decisions on when intervention is needed for performance restoration.

"BMT provides flexibility in data display and analysis, with trends and live feedback, making it easier for us to manage our maintenance strategies and quantify the results of an energy saving solution, or calculate the payback period of a particular investment," said Tsobanoglou.

BMT also note that Minerva has placed orders for BMT shaft power torque meters and vessel performance monitoring systems for two of its new Suezmax tankers, Minerva Kalypso and Minverva Evropi.

In February, Royston said that international oil companies' "growing insistence" that oilfield contract vessels (OSVs) be fitted with fuel monitoring systems, despite the current low price of fuel, has spurred and increased interest in marine engine monitoring systems.
