The Furukawa Battery Co. Ltd., has joined a renewable energy innovation project started by fellow Japan-based Eco Marine Power (EMP) and Greece's Blue Star Ferries

Furukawa will supply batteries for an energy storage trial project involving solar power aboard the Blue Star Delos, a high-speed passenger and car ferry operated by Blue Star Ferries.

The initiative has seen EMP develop renewable energy related technologies for shipping as part of the Blue Star Delos Renewable Energy Innovation Project, which EMP expects to help pave the way for its products in the industry.

"It's a great honor to join this renewable energy shipping project and work with excellent partners. We look forward to evaluating the trial results and further promoting our marine battery solutions to the shipping sector, said " Mr. Kodaka, Furukawa's general manager of global business strategy.

The batteries aboard the ship will be connected to a marine solar panel array and the ship monitoring system developed in part by EMP.

EMP said that further lab tests on the battery would also be done, and the company would also be evaluating other energy storage technologies from Furukawa.

The first results from the trial are expected in early November 2014.

The innovation project was first announced in August this year.
