The Port of Hamburg Wednesday announced that Hapag-Lloyd AG (Hapag-Lloyd) held a naming ceremony at the port for Valparaíso Express, the first of five vessels in the company's new fuel efficient 10,500 TEU class, all of which are expected to "set highest environmental standards."

Also on Wednesday, Hapag-Lloyd is said to have taken delivery of the second vessel in the series at the Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (Hyundai Samho) shipyard in South Korea.

"The five units will set highest environmental standards and achieve particularly low figures for fuel consumption and emissions thanks to innovative on-board technology," explained the port.

The final three ships in the series are expected for delivery by April of 2017.

The "Valparaíso Express" class is noted to be set to serve on Hapag-Lloyd's revised Europe – South America West Coast routes, with four of the five newbuildings slated to replace older Panamax ships.

"This way Hapag-Lloyd can deploy more efficient vessels between North Europe and South America West Coast without adding significant capacity to the market," noted the port in the statement.

In July, Ship & Bunker reported that Hapag-Lloyd and the United Arab Shipping Company S.A.G. (UASC) had finalised a business combination agreement, pending required regulatory and contractual approvals - expected by the end of 2016.
