Global marine coatings supplier Hempel A/S (Hempel) Wednesday announced that after two and a half years on the market, its bunker saving fouling release product, Hempaguard, has now been applied to 500 ships.

Hempel says the anti-fouling product has shown a fuel saving capacity of approximately 6 percent, and is attractive to owners as it retains its effectiveness when switching between slow and regular steaming, as well as idle periods of up to 120 days.

"Hempaguard's success is a true testament of how well our coating has been received by shipowners," said Claes Skat-Roerdam, Marketing Manager of Fouling Control at Hempel.

"We are delighted to reach this incredible milestone after such a short space of time which proves the value of our coating. Our aim is to continue to connect with our customers to develop trusted solutions that match their evolving ship operating patterns."

With operators increasingly looking to reduce their bunker bills - and associated emissions - hull performance has been an area in growing focus.

As a result, Frost & Sullivan has previously predicted that revenues for the marine coatings industry will jump from $5 billion in 2011 to $10.2 billion in 2018.
