Singapore’s Horizon Ferries has begun operating three new bunker saving ferries, says designer UK consultants BMT Nigel Gee.

The monohull high speed ferries, named Horizon 7, Horizon 8, and Horizon 9, were designed in the UK and built by Penguin Shipyard International in Singapore.

The new Flex Ferries feature a hydrodynamically efficient hull form designed to minimise the vessels’ power demand.

The new ships are powered by three Caterpillar C32 diesel engines, driving fixed pitch propellers and reached speeds of 28 knots at a maximum continuous rating of 90 percent (90% MCR) while fully loaded during tests.

The new ships, which are Singapore flagged and classified by Bureau Veritas, “are among only a handful of fully compliant high-speed “2000 HSC Code” [International Maritime Organization code for high speed craft] monohull ferries to be designed and built in recent years,” according to BMT Nigel Gee.

They are said to be already in operation on the competitive route between Singapore and Indonesia’s Batam.

Greece’s Blue Star Ferries was last month said to be trialling a new solar powered battery system on one of its high speed ferries.
