The 2M Alliance has officially launched with the departure of Maersk Line's newest ship from Dalian in China, reports World Maritime News.

The event marks the beginning of the vessel sharing agreement (VSA) made between Maersk Line and Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), which will see the two companies share 185 vessels with an estimated capacity of 2.1 million TEU for the next 10 years.

The maiden voyage of the Munkebo Maersk, a Maersk Line Triple-E-class ship, will take it through several Chinese ports before entering Europe by way of the Suez Canal

The ship was built at the Daiwoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering shipyard in South Korea

The 2M alliance was first announced last year following the collapse of the proposed P3 alliance, and is expected to save Maersk Line $350 million per year.
