Concordia Maritime says has taken delivery of a new chemical and product tanker that was said to reduce fuel consumption by 10-20 percent compared to vessels of a similar size.

The 50,000 DWT Stena Image is the first of two tankers which will be delivered from Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI)'s shipyard in China, though the two are also part of a larger series of 10 ships.

In addition to 18 tanks, the ship includes a more efficient boiler, an engine auto-tuning system, and the ability to recover propeller energy loss, all of which go towards easing fuel consumption.

“We are very pleased to take delivery of the Stena Image, which in many ways represents the new generation of chemical and product tankers, especially in terms of fuel efficiency, cargo capacity and safety," says Kim Ullman, CEO of Concordia Maritime.

The Stena Image, as part of the IMOIIMAX concept, is a leader when it comes to these three aspects and sets a new standard in both our customers’ and our own interests.”

The order for up to 10 of the fuel-efficient tankers is a joint order with Stena Bulk.

Early last year, the two companies announced that Stena Bulk would receive four of the tankers, with the two companies also holding options for four additional ships.
