Classification society Bureau Veritas has published new liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering guidelines, industry news site The Motorship reports.

The publication, Guidance on LNG Bunkering NI 618, addresses steps that port authorities and bunkering firms must take before the start of operations, issues that should be observed throughout a bunkering operation, emergency management, and staff training.

"We really believe that LNG has great potential as a clean fuel for shipping," said Jean-Francois Segretain, technical director, of the firm's marine and offshore division.

"But fears over its availability in the bunker chain are holding back owners from adopting it."

Segretain said clear standards should help ports and terminals offer LNG bunkering.

"Bureau Veritas has very wide experience with LNG in the marine context and we hope that these guidelines will give ports, terminals, LNG suppliers and shipowners confidence to proceed," he said.

Bureau Veritas previously worked with Brittany Ferries on its adoption of LNG bunkers for some vessels.

Segretain said the firm will not specify the equipment to be used in bunkering, which the ISO will handle, but about procedures and staff training.

Other class societies, including DNV GL and ABS have issued their own bunkering guidelines.
