Classification society ABS has released a report providing guidance on liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering in North America.

"As the potential for LNG fueled vessels in North America continues to grow, uncertainty exists on how to meet various regulatory requirements," said ABS Vice President for Global Gas Solutions Patrick Janssens.

"This report lays out an integrated approach to addressing the federal, state, provincial and local requirements that may impact LNG bunkering infrastructure."

The report, which covers U.S. and Canadian regulations, promises a "path forward" for regulatory approval of LNG bunkering, said Chuck Mitchell, ABS's group vice president for global initiatives.

"As we learn more from each project, and as regulatory requirements mature, we will continue to update this report in order to provide industry-leading advice to stakeholders in the LNG fuel market," he said.

The report, available on the ABS website, addresses potential risks and safeguards and discusses issues specific to particular locations and ports.

The U.S. Coast Guard issued its own draft guidelines on LNG bunkering in U.S. ports in February.
