Sohar Port and Freezone (SOHAR) has today announced at the SIBCON 2014 conference in Singapore that it is set to join major bunkering hubs Singapore and Rotterdam in offering ship-to-ship Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) transfers at the port, with land based LNG bunkering coming at a later date.

SOHAR's Executive Commercial Manager, Edwin Lammers, said the service would be up and running very quickly.

"We are delighted to announce that we have put all of the necessary licensing structures in place to be able to start LNG ship-to-ship refuelling at SOHAR," he said.

"This will be the first phase of our project, and the low level of investment required to start providing ship-to-ship services means we will be able to move very quickly in issuing the new licenses and getting things up and running.

"The second phase will involve installing in-port LNG services for vessels calling at SOHAR," continued Lammers.

SOHAR said it has identified an emerging trend in the market and expects to see shipping lines switching to LNG.

Edwin Lammers recently called for unity among global industry leaders to tackle cost, quality, and safety concerns brought about by new Emissions Control Area rules coming into force on January 1.
