The deputy captain of a Greek-owned tanker Tuesday was reported to have been killed after the vessel was boarded by pirates while waiting to load off Nigeria, Reuters reports.

Three more of the 23 crew were taken hostage.

The Maltese-flagged Kalamos was at sea in the Qua Iboe region between Cameroon and Nigeria when the attack took place.

"The foreign and shipping ministries have taken the necessary actions for the rescue of the hostages," said Greek Deputy Minister for Shipping, Theodris Dritsas, whose ministry also said the remaining crew were safe.

It is understood the ship had sailed from China to load in Nigeria.

Earlier this week, Malaysia, Singapore, and other regional neighbours said they would launch coordinated patrols to combat growing piracy around the Johor Strait.
