Damen Shipyards Group (Damen) has signed an agreement with Netherlands-based AEC Maritime (AEC) to help make its exhaust gas scrubbers available to maritime clients.

To date, AEC Systems has been mainly focused on land-based scrubber systems, and has over 2,600 such installations.

While it has some scrubbers in operation for clients in the shipping industry, AEC says it has been limited in its product distribution due to a lack of maritime background, and therefore looked to Damen as a suitable maritime partner to strengthen its position within the market.

"This is an important time for the scrubber sector: in fact, the market is now," said Marcel Clephas, AEC's Chief Technical Officer.

"We knew that shipowners will always need to go to a shipyard for a retrofit, but we discovered that clients want turnkey solutions – that include all aspects of the retrofit – to be carried out under one roof."

AEC say its scrubber systems remove more than 98 percent of sulfur from a vessel's exhaust and enable vessel owners to exceed IMO requirements.

In June, Ship & Bunker reported that the Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems Association (EGCSA) said that the marine scrubber industry has "ample scrubber capacity for 2020" and is ready to help shipping comply with the 0.50 percent global sulfur cap for bunkers that is expected to come into force that year.
