Norwegian e-navigation company NAVTOR has signed a deal to use U.S.-based Applied Weather Technology, Inc.'s (AWT) maritime weather routing systems in its new NavStation software, AWT announced this week.

Maritime weather routing company AWT will provide around-the-clock weather routing information and analysis to the NavStation software, allowing users to constantly update routes as needed.

"This heralds another significant e-navigation breakthrough," said Tor Svanes, CEO of NAVTOR.

"AWT leads the market in gathering and analysing meteorological data ... By integrating their software and expertise into our own products, we can further refine the service we offer to navigators to reach a new e-navigation reality," he said.

Navstation takes the form of a "digital chart table," displaying all data such as ENCs, digital publications, and other services like piracy updates on a single screen.

It can be used as software on a computer or touch device, or in the form of a supplied 46-inch "gigapad" touch device for use on the bridge.

"NavStation's launch at SMM this year was a watershed moment,"said Haydn Jones, CEO of AWT.

"Like all the best innovations, it answers a real need in the market and simplifies tasks – freeing navigators from the burden of rushing around the bridge, between different consoles, software and charts to access voyage critical information," he said.

Optional features also include tidal information, iceberg updates and all Admiralty digital products and publications.

NAVTOR currently provides e-navigation products and services to shipowners controlling over 70% of Norway's offshore vessels.

Earlier this year Norwegian weather analysis company StormGeo acquired AWT.
