Netherlands-based GoodFuels Marine has announced that its biofuel products have received the Roundtable of Sustainable Biomaterials' (RSB's) highest standard of certification for the second year in a row.

The certification is said to assess the sustainable viability of the biomaterials used by GoodFuels to produce bunker fuel.

"GoodFuels is working to change the story of marine shipping emissions. They aim to promote the use of RSB-certified 'drop-in' marine fuels," said Barbara Bramble, Chair of RSB’s Board of Directors.

"By looking to source RSB certified fuels – the 'gold standard' for biofuels sustainability – GoodFuels will be paving the way for a more sustainable future for the marine transportation industry."

In order to be considered sustainable and eligible for the RSB's certification, biomaterials must meet RSB's set of 12 defined principles, which cover levels of CO2 reduction, human rights impacts, and legal criteria.

The certification, which has come after a Control Union audit of GoodFuels Marine, is said to illustrate "GoodFuels’ recognition for a globally accepted and standardised certification scheme that checks and guarantees the sustainability of biofuels to the highest standards."

In October, Ship & Bunker reported that Wärtsilä, Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V., and GoodFuels Marine had cooperated to launch a sustainable marine biofuels program.

In November, it was reported that GoodFuels Marine's CEO, Dirk Kronemeijer, said biofuels could make up 5-10 percent of the total global marine fuel mix by 2030.
