The International Maritime Organization (IMO) Wednesday announced that its 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was highlighted as part of the first Maritime Administrators' Forum in Singapore on Tuesday - part of Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2016.

The forum is said to have taken on the IMO World Maritime Day theme 2016, "Shipping: Indispensable to the World," with the IMO represented by the Technical Cooperation Division's Juvenal Shiundu, who emphasised IMO's efforts encourage "closer collaboration in the implementation of IMO instruments" through improved information and idea sharing among maritime administrations.

The event, which was convened by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and attended by participants from 16 Asian, European, African, and Latin American countries, is said to have included two sessions, including the first, titled "Indispensable Shipping: Country Maritime Initiatives," and the second, titled "Indispensable Shipping: Meeting the Regulatory Requirements."

The event's participants are said to have been informed of continuing efforts by the IMO to coordinate its technical cooperation program with the SDGs, including SDG 14 for conserving and sustainably using the oceans.

In January, the IMO explained it had chosen the theme for the IMO World Maritime Day 2016 to emphasise the "critical link" between global society and shipping, as well as to increase awareness of the relevance of IMO's role as international shipping's global regulatory body.
