Lloyd's Register says it will work with GE Marine to market gas turbine-power systems for commercial ships.

The two parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to identify possible projects using the systems, which offer high power in a lightweight, small package, as well as fuel flexibility.

"Through the MOU we will identify target segments and commercial customers for our highly-efficient marine gas turbine systems," said Brien Bolsinger, vice president for Marine Operations at GE Marine.

"GE already has an established base of 90 marine gas turbines operating on 17 cruise ships, five high speed yachts and 19 fast ferries."

The systems can also include Dry Low NOx emissions (DLE) combustion systems, which meet Tier III IMO/Tier IV US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements when operating on natural gas or on liquid fuels in combined cycle.

"This MOU will allow us to work with some of the leading shipyards to approve in principle GE gas turbine-powered commercial vessels for global customers," said Nick Brown, marine chief operating officer at Lloyd's Register.

"We can assist shipping industry stakeholders with understanding how the technical performance of these gas turbines can help meet commercial requirements."

GE Marine, Lloyd's Register and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC) are also working together under a separate agreement on a gas turbine-powered liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier.
