A new design for a gas-turbine-powered liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier promises low lifecycle costs and strong environmental performance, Brien Bolsinger, vice president of marine operations for GE Marine told China Daily.

GE Marine is working with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC) of China and Lloyd's Register on the new design.

The vessel would have a capacity of 170,000 cubic meters.

"By employing GE gas turbines, this LNG carrier design will address increasingly stringent worldwide environmental regulations," Bolsinger said.

He added that the cooperation between GE and DSIC will help upgrade the Chinese shipbuilding industry.

DSIC president Yu Fengping said China will need to expand its supply of LNG carriers over the next decade as its energy needs grow.

"The shipyard is committed to developing the next generation of LNG carriers using new technology," he said.

China Shipping Development Co. (China Shipping) announced in March that it was working with partners to buy six LNG tankers in an effort to expand its involvement in LNG shipping and drive profits.
