Icelandic marine energy management and fleet performance company Marorka Tuesday announced that Juergen Kudritzki, Marorka's CEO, and Dong Jianfu, President of the Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute (SMDERI), have signed an agreement that will see the two organisations cooperate on the promotion of maritime energy management in order to enhance the "green competitiveness" of Chinese shipping and improve sustainable business development.

Under the agreement, Marorka and SMDERI will work to improve ship efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, develop a centre in Shanghai for product training and demonstration, and encourage the adoption of energy management and operational performance solutions within the Chinese market.

Marorka says that these objectives are all crucial parts in improving China's shipbuilding and shipping companies' competitiveness within the market.

"The introduction of new international shipbuilding standards along with new regulations mean that shipping operators must adapt to green energy saving and environmental protection requirements through the application of cutting-edge scientific and technological advances," said Marorka.

"Maritime energy management and operational performance solutions can help owners save 3 –15 percent of fuel per year without altering existing on-board hardware."

Marorka says the that the cooperation agreement will result in "significant" environmental benefits, as well as considerable financial benefits for the Chinese shipping industry.

In February, Marorka announced that Kudritzki would take over as CEO of the company.
