Wärtsilä Corporation has received an order to install hybrid scrubbers aboard three 2,500 TEU containerships owned by an unnamed European owner, the company announced Thursday.

Wärtsilä said the Installations will be carried out by China's Jinhai Heavy Industry Co. and are expected to be delivered in December 2015.

The system is comprised of two units to address both the main and auxiliary engines, with special attention paid to allowing the systems to operate for extended periods with zero discharge.

"The ships will be operating at times in harsh climatic conditions and Wärtsilä has considerable experience in developing scrubber systems technology for use in challenging marine environments.," said Sigurd Jenssen, director of exhaust gas cleaning at Wärtsilä Ship Power.

"The system is optimised to give the necessary flexibility in relation to the ships' operations, with special emphasis given to minimising the operational costs,"

Last month, the company also announced that it was developing propulsion systems capable of operating with Environmentally Acceptable Lubricants (EALs) required in U.S. waters.
