Rolls-Royce Monday announced that it has signed a £25 million ($32.78 million) contract with Norwegian shipbuilder Kleven Verft AS (Kleven) for design and equipment, including the supply of a bunker-saving wave piercing bow, on two polar cruise vessels being built for Hurtigruten AS (Hurtigruten).

Rolls-Royce has previously explained that its wave piercing bow enables the improvement of cargo ship efficiency, reducing both fuel consumption and emissions.

"Hurtigruten and Kleven have agreed to build state-of the art passenger vessels, and Rolls-Royce will provide some of the most innovate ship technology on the market today," said Helge Gjerde, Director of Offshore and Merchant Solutions at Rolls-Royce.

"The ships soon about to take shape in the docks of Kleven will be striking. They will attract interest to both the Norwegian ship building industry and to Hurtigruten as a leading player within the field of explorer tourism," said Daniel Skjeldam, CEO of Hurtigruten.

The contract between Kleven and Rolls-Royce is also said to include the option for two more vessels.

"To me, this contract is proof of the combined innovation powers of Norway's maritime industry and the country's growing tourism industry. Together we are providing growth along the long and beautiful Norwegian coastline."

Earlier in the month, Hurtigruten announced that it had christened its new explorer ship MS Spitsbergen, which the company says has recently received technical improvements to reduce emissions and fuel consumption, and make it "environmentally-friendly."
