ABB Partners with Cavotec for Shore Power to Develop "Green Ports"
ABB Thursday announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Cavotec SA (Cavotec) to jointly offer complete shore power solutions to ports around the world, a move that ABB says will encourage the development of "green ports."
"Shore-to-ship power is a sustainable solution to reduce local emissions and enable green port operations," said Oleg Aleinikov, Managing Director of ABB's Grid Integration business.
"This strategic cooperation with Cavotec, allows us to combine our complementary capabilities and bring optimised solutions to our customers. It is very much in line with our Next Level strategy to forge alliances and partnerships."
ABB says the agreement will combine its expertise and resources with that of Cavotec to not only supply shore power soultions, but provide full lifecycle services and support as well, including port electrification technologies, frequency conversion systems, power transformers, control and protection equipment, and consulting services.
Specifically, under the deal, ABB says Cavotec will provide interface equipment, including shore connection boxes and cable management systems - part of Cavotec's Alternative Marine Power (AMP) offering.
"The synergies between ABB and Cavotec provide the basis to expand our leading position into the Alternative Marine Power market," said Ottonel Popesco, CEO of Cavotec.
"This alliance will reinforce our market leadership as the world's best Shore Connection Interface System supplier."
Despite last year being branded "a last-generation solution" by South Carolina Ports Authority CEO James Newsome, shore power technology continues to receive widespread backing as an effective emissions mitigation solution for ports.
Most recently, MPs in the UK this week stepped in to back calls for shore power facilities at a new UK cruise terminal planned for Greenwich, London.
