Hapag-Lloyd Monday announced it has joined Shenzhen's voluntary Green Port Initiative aimed at reducing emissions from ships berthed at the city's port.

Under the agreement, Hapag-Lloyd has agreed to burn only bunkers with a sulfur content lower than 0.5 percent while its ships are docked at the Port of Shenzhen.

"By joining the Shenzhen Port Green Convention, Hapag-Lloyd has once again demonstrated its commitment to environmental and health protection on a voluntary basis that goes beyond national and international requirements, thus emphasising how important this is to our Company," said Hapag-Lloyd COO Anthony Firmin.

Hapag-Lloyd pointed to other voluntary emissions reduction schemes in which it has participated to date, including the At Berth Clean Fuels Program in Seattle, the Port Metro Vancouver Blue Circle Award in Vancouver, and the Fair Winds Charter in Hong Kong.

Hapag-Lloyd also said it consistently uses lower sulfur fuels than mandated by interntional law.

Outside of Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) the company burns bunkers with an average sulfur content of 2.1 percent compared with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) global sulfur cap of 3.5 percent.

This month, Hapag-Lloyd CEO Habben Janssen said "it should be possible to make money" in the box shipping business.
