Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) said today that the fire onboard the fore section of its containership MOL Comfort is still not yet under control, with the fire fighting efforts said be hampered by adverse weather.

The fire, which broke out on Saturday, is being tackled by the Indian Coast Guard vessel Samudra Prahari, along with the tug that was towing the fore section of the vessel, and two other patrol boats.

MOL reported that most of the containers on deck have been burnt out, while it has not been able to confirm the situation in the cargo hold.

The containership broke in two on June 17 during adverse weather around 200 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen.

The aft part of the vessel sank on June 27 at a water depth of about 4,000 metres with about 1,500 metric tonnes of fuel oil aboard.

No significant leakage has yet to be reported.
