ExxonMobil has launched a new engine oil for ships using 0.10 percent sulfur fuel in Emissions Control Areas (ECAS) when new rules take effect at the start of next year, the company said in an emailed statement.

The lube oil, Mobilgard 525, is intended for use in slow-speed engines using fuels such as marine gas oil (MGO) rather than heavy fuel oil (HFO), a switch that can lead to deposit formation and engine wear.

The product meets MAN Diesel & Turbo (MAN Diesel) and Wärtsilä Corp. (Wärtsilä) requirements for use in engines operating on MGO.

"Next year vessel operators have a number of options to comply with the pending ECA sulphur limit," said Ray Pomfret, manager, global marine lubricants sales at ExxonMobil.

"With Mobilgard 525, customers now have a high performance cylinder oil that is formulated for use with ECA compliant MGO and our new category of marine fuel ExxonMobil Premium HDME 50.

"Mobilgard 525 will help ensure vessel operators can meet the new ECA requirements without compromising on engine protection and performance."

Shell Marine Products (SMP) and Total Lubmarine (Lubmarine) both recently introduced their own lubricants for vessels burning low-sulfur fuel.
