Oil Spill Contained in Philippines
The Philippine Coast Guard says it contained oil spilled from a containership at the Port of Ormoc Saturday.
MV Ocean Legacy was unloading containers around 7:35 a.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2012, when it began to list to the side against the pier, and a coast guard team arrived to address the situation, inspect the hull, and contain spilled oil.
Ship captain Junto Eslawan told The Philippine Star that big waves pushed the ship over as it rammed into the port.
Capt. Pablo Gonzales, commander of the Coast Guard's Eastern Visayas region, said about three barrels of oil spilled, but further leaks were prevented and the Coast Guard was using oil booms and dispersants to deal with the spill.
The Ocean Legacy is owned and operated by Manila-based Oceanic Container Lines Inc., and was manned by 29 crew members, according to the Coast Guard.
