Indian shipyard Timblo Drydocks will build five vessels for Mongla Port in southwestern Bangladesh, the company said in an emailed press release.

The shipyard, which is part of the Panduranga Timblo Group, won an $8.5 million contract with the Mongla Port Authority to build one 18-inch cutter section dredger and four support vessels, including accommodation craft, for the port.

The new vessels are part of the port authority's efforts to improve the port through maintenance dredging, improvements to navigation aids, development of two new cargo berths, and the addition of container handling equipment.

The deal is being financed through the Export-Import Bank of India to support trade between India and Bangladesh.

"Timblo is proud to have been awarded this project and we look forward to working with our partners to deliver a world class set of dredging equipment to Mongla Port Authority," said Sarvesh Pramod Timblo, executive director of Timblo Drydocks.

"Timblo has a long history of designing and building innovative vessels and this contract continues this tradition and positions us to attract further contracts in the dredging market in Asia and further abroad."

The port's development efforts aim to increase access by dredging the outer bar area of the Pussur Channel, improving regular maintenance dredging and improve support for navigation both in the day and at night, according to its website.
