The Bosphorus Strait Tuesday reopened to tanker traffic after it had been closed for over 24 hours on Monday, Platts reports.

A significant backlog of tankers was reported, with traffic expected to continue through Tuesday night to reach their destinations.

“Tanker traffic restarted at 11:49 am Tuesday [09:49am GMT] and is expected to continue after midnight tonight to clear some of the backlog of vessels," said a port agent.

The closure was due to heavy fog and resultant low visibility.

The strait is, together with the Dardenelles, the only commercially navigable route between the Mediterranean and Black Seas.

Turkey recently announced it had joined the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Ballast Water Management Convention, bringing the Convention closer to ratification.
