Three Russian Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) bunkering vessels currently under construction will benefit from French technology that is said to ensure safe LNG transportation, Portnews IAA reports.

The Mark III membrane containment systems will be provided by French engineering company GTT, which signed an agreement with Russian company LNG-Gorskaya LLC to incorporate the technology into the vessels' cargo tanks.

Kirill Lyats, director general of LNG-Gorskaya, added that his firm has also discussed the possibility of GTT designing and suppling materials for its new floating LNG plant at Gorskaya station near Saint-Petersburg.

"Membrane containment systems developed by GTT engineers for liquefied gas is the world's best technology today," said Lyats.

"It ensures safe and environmentally friendly transportation of LNG."

The three tankers, each with a capacity of 7,300 cubic metres, are being constructed by the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), and the contract, which includes a provision for the development of another six LNG tankers, is worth RUB 5.67 billion ($102 million)

Last month Ship & Bunker reported that the LNG plant, which will have an annual capacity of 1.26 mln t, intends to start selling LNG in December of 2016.
