Diesel fuel has leaked into Germany's Kiel Canal following the collision of two ships early Monday morning, according to the website of Germany's Central Command for Maritime Emergencies (CCME).

Two ships carrying fertiliser, the Saint Vincent-flagged MS Siderfly and the MS Ivory Coral, registered in the Netherlands, collided at 3 a.m., leaving the Siderfly leaking diesel fuel.

Authorities are using oil booms to contain the leak and stabilising the Siderfly, which is listing at  a 45-degree angle with two large holes in its hull, with two tugs.

The Coral Ivory was not damaged in the collision, and no one was reported injured.

The cause of the accident is not yet known.

Bloomberg reports that the size of the spill is also unknown.

The canal, the busiest artificial waterway in the world, is closed, and a CCME spokeswoman told  Bloomberg it is not yet clear when it will reopen.
