Belgian natural gas transmission and infrastructure company Fluxys Belgium says it is "working with various market operators" to develop natural gas as a fuel for marine transport.

The company, which operates the Zeeburgge liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, is working to use gas as a fuel for both maritime and road transport as LNG and compressed natural gas (CNG).

Fluxys Belgium is also working with fellow natural gas infrastructure companies Swedegas and GRTgaz to establish a carbon-neutral gas supply by 2050, exploring options including power-to-gas technologies, hydrogen transmission, and biogas.

In addition, the company said it is joining energy and engineering companies from other European nations in the North Sea Power to Gas Platform, in an effort to convert surplus electricity from renewable generation into gas so it can be stored.

The company said last year that it is working to make Belgium into a hub for LNG ship fuel by opening a new jetty at Zeebrugge by 2015.
