Doosan Infracore (Doosan) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the joint development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines for small vessels with Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) and Samjin Yard Corporation (Samjin Yard), South Korean media reports.

The agreement is said to have been signed in response to a recent growth in demand for the conversion of small domestic ships from diesel-propulsion to LNG-powered engines.

"The development of LNG engines for marine vessels will be an important turning point for eco-friendly conversion of the domestic small-sized marine market operated solely by diesel engines," said Doosan Executive Vice President Joonho Yoo, head of the Engine BG.

"We are anticipating that we will be able to export LNG engines for vessels in the future."

Earlier this month, Ship & Bunker reported that KOGAS, through a new MoU with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), DNV GL, and KC LNG Tech Co., Ltd. (KC LNG Tech), was set to develop a protocol for LNG bunkering in South Korea.
