MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MAN) today announced that Knutsen OAS Shipping AS (Knutsen) has ordered four MAN B&W 5G70ME-GI dual-fuel low-speed diesel engines with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems for two 180,000 m3 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker newbuildings.

"These orders are notable in that they are the 6th  and 7th such carriers bound for service for Spanish utilities that have been ordered within the past four years alone," said Bjarne Foldager, ‎Vice President Sales & Promotion for MAN's Two-Stroke Business.

"As such, our G70ME-GI engine has become a popular choice for LNG carriers globally. This can be attributed in great part to the ME-GI’s embracing of the Diesel principle, which is simply the most effective method of converting gas fuel to propulsion power."

MAN notes that the company sees "significant" opportunities coming for gas-fuelled tonnage as fuel prices rise and regulations on shipping emissions tighten.

"Indeed, research indicates that the ME-GI engine delivers significant reductions in CO2, NOx and SOx emissions," said MAN.

Last year, Christian Poensgen, senior vice president engineering at MAN said low bunker prices mean that energy efficiency improvements on marine engines need to be delivered at "twice the value for the same price."
