A new bunker barge came into service this week at Cochin Port in Kochi, India, a local supplier has told Ship & Bunker.

The new barge, MT Rajashree, was commissioned on Tuesday and is the fifth barge now in operation at the port.

With a 1500 metric tonne (mt) capacity and a pumping rate of 250 to 300 mt per hour, it also has the largest capacity and fastest pumping rate of the five barges in service at Cochin.

"With the introduction of new barges of higher capacity as well as improved focus by the Port Authorities and Suppliers in improving bunker infrastructure at Kochi, we are quite hopeful that the vessels calling at Kochi Port or passing-by may benefit in terms of availability of bunkers at competitive prices with increased efficiency," Praveen Jaiswal, GM - Head Operations, Chemoil Adani told Ship & Bunker.

"With these improvements shippers will have opportunity to weigh Kochi as an important bunker destination in terms of other alternatives like Colombo, Mumbai, etc."

Cochin's second largest barge, Shree Krishna XV, was introduced in August and allows ships to bunker at night and during monsoon season.
