MAN Diesel & Turbo to Supply Dual-Fuel Engines for World's First LNG Powered Car Carriers
MAN Diesel and Turbo (MAN) has announced it will supply two of its dual-fuel engines to be used in the building of new ships for short-sea RoRo specialist United European Car Carriers (UECC).
MAN will supply its MAN B7W 8S50ME-GI engines, which are capable of running on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), heavy fuel oil, or marine gasoil, for use in two new Pure Car/Truck Carriers commissioned by UECC.
"When in service, they will be capable of completing a fourteen-day round trip in the Baltic operating solely on LNG, including main engine and auxiliary power generation," said MAN.
The engines are said to combine gas injection with slow steaming capability, and offer negligible fuel slip.
The order will lead to the world's first gas propelled Pure Car/Truck Carriers, according to MAN.
The ships will be built at the NACKS shipyard in Nantong, China, with delivery dates of 2016.
It is understood that UECC has signed an exclusive contract for the supply of LNG to the new vessels via a dedicated bunker tanker at the Dutch port of Zeebrugge.
European LNG infrastructure was given a boost last month as the EU mandated development of facilities for LNG bunkering at all member states.
