LR Offering LNG Bunker Training for Ship Owners
Lloyd's Register (LR) is offering a new two-day training course on the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as a marine fuel, LR Marine Communications Manager Nick Brown writes in his latest blog post.
The first course was held recently in Gothenburg, and more locations in Europe and North America are planned in coming months.
Brown writes that LNG carriers have been "one of the great success stories in shipping" thanks to the industry's focus on safety.
"And 49 years of LNG operations show that training is vital if you want safe operations," he wrote.
"If LNG is going to be used as fuel, everybody will hope that the record of LNG transportation can be continued in the LNG bunkering era."
Citing a conversation with Andrew Clifton of the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators (SIGTTO), Brown wrote that it is already difficult to find qualified crews for LNG ships, and the challenge will increase as the use of LNG as fuel increases.
The next courses will take place in November in Victoria and Montreal, Canada and in Fort Lauderdale in the U.S., and other sessions over the next six months will take place in Bergen, Copenhagen, London, Southampton, Paris, and Piraeus.
SIGTTO has also helped to establish a non-governmental organisation (NGO) focused on safe LNG bunkering, while class society DNV GL recently announced plans for an LNG bunkering guide.
