MAN Diesel & Turbo (MAN) is introducing a new four-stroke engine offering dual diesel fuel-gas running, the company says.

The L35/44DF, which can be used as a retrofit to engines already in service, was designed to comply with the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s Tier II emission limits in diesel mode and IMO Tier III limits in gas operation.

MAN said a high degree of fuel flexibility was one of its primary design objectives, and the engine can use HFO, MDO, MGO as well as natural gas.

The first prototype entered testing at the start of the second quarter of 2012, and a V-type engine version is also being developed.

Tier II limits on NOX emissions apply to ships constructed on or after the start of 2011, while Tier III controls apply to those built starting in 2016, but only while operating in specific Emission Control Areas (ECAs).

MAN says the engine is available from six- to 10-cylinder configurations equivalent to total power outputs from 3.2 MW to 5.3 MW.
