Danish box shipping company Maersk has said that in order to make zero-carbon technology for shipping commercially viable, the industry needs to know what regulation it can expect.

In an interview with maritime news provider Lloyd's List at the recent Ambition 1.5C industry forum, John Kornerup Bang, head of sustainability strategy at Maersk, said policymakers needed to provide the shipping industry with a credible decarbonisation roadmap to stimulate the necessary investment in low-carbon and zero-carbon technologies.

Kornerup Bang said that there are few zero-carbon technologies ready for widespread commercial use. In addition, shipping lags behind in regulation that could incentivise the development and adoption of alternative fuels.

If decarbonisation is to happen in the long term, the industry will need zero-carbon technology to be available in the mid-2030s. This will not happen if efforts do not begin now, he said.
