Cavotec Gets ABB Order for 20 Propulsion Slips
Swiss-based engineering company Cavotec says it has received an order from the Swiss power and automation technology company ABB for 20 compact Marine Propulsion Slip (MPS) ring units to be fitted to Azipod marine propulsion systems.
The MPS units, used in cruise ships, container ships, offshore platforms, and specialty vessels like icebreakers, allow vessel propellers to rotate through a full 360 degrees on the vertical axis, allowing for safe transmission of electrical powers to main motors and auxiliary services.
ABB has said the Azipod systems can reduce fuel consumption 25 percent.
"Cavotec and ABB have a long-standing relationship spanning several areas, including advanced ship propulsion technologies," said Cavotec Shanghai Managing Director Gustavo Miller.
"This order is another example of our enduring and valued cooperation."
Deliveries of the units are scheduled to finish by the start of Q2 2013.
