Maersk Line and Maersk Tankers Eye Bunker Savings with Weathernews Deal
Maersk Line and Maersk Tankers have signed a three-year contract with Japan-based Weathernews, which includes weather routing services, port forecasts, and other weather-driven risk communication services aimed at increasing bunker-savings, according to reports.
"Maersk Line has undertaken several strategic initiatives to enable world class bunker efficiency for our fleet and reduce carbon footprint," said Niels Bruus, Head of Fleet Performance at Maersk Line.
"We want the frontline to take ownership to optimise bunker usage by providing them with the right tools and systems. Weather plays a critical role both from a safety as well as a performance perspective."
Weathernews is said to provide continuous monitoring and communication to Maersk Line and Maersk Tankers' vessels 24 hours a day, all year from five global operations centres to inform both safety and bunker saving purposes.
Bjarne Foldager, Global Head of Operations for Maersk Tankers, says that the service will support the company in maximising fuel efficiency between ports by "reducing the impact of weather delays at sea and ports along with improving safety of vessels, crew onboard and cargo our ships carry around the world."
In September, Eniram Ltd (Eniram) announced the release of three new ship efficiency solutions, including Eniram Speed 3.0, designed to reduce fuel consumption and emissions for shipowners and operators by taking into account various factors such as prevailing sea conditions, weather, weather forecasts, required engine loads, squat and speed restrictions, as well as emission control areas (ECAs).
