Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has announced the development of its Integrated Smart Ship Solution (ISSS), which the company says is capable of realising economical and reliable navigation and management of ships, including bunker-savings.

HHI says the ISSS, which helps ships' efficient operation by using ICT and big data, is the "first of its kind" in the global shipbuilding industry.

The solution standardises ways of navigation varying depending on levels of skills and experiences of navigators, collects and analyses real-time information on navigations, and enhances efficiency and safety of ships - cutting annual operating cost by an expected 6 percent.

"HHI's technology seeks to align with delivering the key benefits we believe the maritime industry will most benefit from through the adoption of connected, digital and autonomous technologies as the next generation of shipping embraces digitalization," said Luis Benito, Innovation, Strategy and Research Director for Marine and Offshore at Lloyd's Register (LR)

"According to Clarkson Research, about 6,500 ships are to be ordered globally for the next five years. Considering the global shipbuilding market share HHI takes up now, ISSS is to be installed on approximately 700 ships for the comparable time period."

HHI notes that it developed the smart ship technology in 2011 and has so far applied the system to approximately 300 ships.

To support this development, HHI further notes that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in May with the National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (Bahri) to establish a partnership in the smart ship sector.

As Ship & Bunker reported in October, Anwar Siddiqui, Advisor to the CEO of Bahri, said large shipping companies cannot afford to not utilise big data to glean improved operational efficiency, among other benefits, and can expect to gain a 5-10 percent boost in overall performance.
