Bail Revoked for Crew in Indian Bunkering Case
The crew of a U.S. ship that was detained in India in October over allegations of illegal bunkering have had their bail revoked, the Times of India reports.
The principal sessions court cancelled conditional bail that had been granted to 35 crew members of the Seaman Guard Ohio after they were arrested on charges of entering into Indian waters with illegal arms.
A judicial magistrate court had granted them bail on December 26 on the grounds that a charge-sheet had not been filed within 60 days, but a later court review found that the nature of the case allowed for the document to be filed within 90 days.
After the ship was detained, Indian police also arrested five fishermen accused of illegally selling 1,500 liters of diesel fuel the ship, which is operated by U.S. security company AdvanFort International Inc. (AdvanFort).
AdvanFort said in October that rifles and ammunition carried for use in counter-piracy operations were properly registered and licensed and that it may have been "the victim" of local violations in regard to the sale of fuel.
