"Lowest Possible Emissions" MAN Engines Ordered
MAN Diesel & Turbo (MAN) says it is building two engines for the Lienchiang County Government of Taiwan designed for optimal manoeuvrability and lowest possible emissions.
The 9L32/44CR four-stroke engines, part of a complete propulsion system to be delivered by MAN, will run a Ropax ferry sailing between Keelung and the Matsu islands near the Chinese mainland.
MAN is building the engines at its Augsburg, Germany location and plans to deliver the full propulsion system by December to keep the 106-metre vessel, to be built by Jade Shipbuilding, on course for a January 2014 delivery.
The engine uses MAN's Common Rail technology, an environmentally friendly water-lubricated stern tube arrangement, a ship alarm system using traditional Chinese characters, and two four-blade, fixed-pitch propellers designed to maximize efficiency and minimise noise and vibration.
MAN chose the specifications to fit Liechiang County's priorities, which included the lowest possible fuel consumption and emissions, and no visible soot emissions while operating in harbour.
The Taiwanese government has been working to reduce marine emissions in recent years, in collaboration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
