Akzo Nobel N.V. (AkzoNobel) today announced that its range of bunker-saving Intersleek marine coatings have provided ship owners and operators with $3 billion in fuel savings since the technology's introduction 21 years ago.

The company says that, with more than 5,500 vessels having been coated with Intersleek's technology, the product range has helped to save 10 million tonnes of fuel and 32 million tonnes of CO2.

AkzoNobel notes that total savings calculations are based on the savings achieved by using Intersleek in comparison to each vessel's previous hull coating system.

"Intersleek has come a long way since we first discovered the foul release effect of silicone elastomers in the laboratory as part of our R&D process to create more sustainable technologies," said Oscar Wezenbeek, Managing Director of AkzoNobel's Marine Coatings business.

"Since then, it has had a significant impact on the shipping industry and made a tangible difference for many ship owners, as well as playing a leading role in our ongoing commitment to making shipping more sustainable."

Marking the Intersleek range's 21st anniversary, AkzoNobel is launching a campaign that will offer a series of commercial incentives intended to drive continued uptake of Intersleek across the global fleet.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, AkzoNobel offers a carbon credits programme that provides rewards to ship owners who have converted vessels to a bunker-saving, biocide-free advanced hull coating.
