The P3 shipping alliance of the world's top three container shipping companies will operate a total of 255 ships with a capacity of 2.6 million twenty foot equivalent units (TEUs) on 27 service loops, according to details released by Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC).

The alliance, consisting of MSC, Maersk Line, and CMA CGM, will jointly operate eight services from Asia to Northern Europe, five between Asia and the Western Mediterranean and Black Sea area, five trans-Pacific loops to the U.S. West Coast, four from Asia to the U.S. East Coast, three on trans-Atlantic routes from Northern Europe to North America, and two from the Western Mediterranean to the U.S. East and Gulf Coasts.

Ships on the Asia-North Europe routes will range in size from 8,500 TEU to 19,000 TEU, while those travelling between Asia and the U.S. will run from 4,500 TEU to 11,500 TEU.

The Port of Antwerp declared itself "extremely pleased" with the routes, which centralise sailing areas, calling for more calls to Antwerp.

"Such a strong representation in the P3 Network proves that the three largest container shipping companies in the world are confident of the strengths which our port has," said Marc Van Peel, chairman of the Antwerp Port Authority.
