The International Maritime Organization (IMO) says the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre (MTCC) in the African Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre (MTCC-Africa) was launched on December 13 in Mombasa, Kenya, where it is hosted by the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

The centre of excellence for low-carbon shipping technology joins others in Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America as part of the Global Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre Network (GMN), which is run by IMO and funded by the European Union (EU).

As Ship & Bunker has reported, the centres are intended to function as regional focal points for a wide range of activities including improving compliance with existing and future international energy-efficiency regulations.

"The launch of Africa's Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre comes at a time when global action against climate change is needed more than ever before," said Bruno Pozzi, the Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Kenya.

Earlier this week, MTCC-Pacific was launched in Suva, Fiji, where it is hosted by the Pacific Community (SPC) in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).
