Spanish Player Eyes European Gas Bunker Market
Spanish gas company Enagas intends to make its mark on the emerging liquified natural gas (LNG) bunker market in Europe.
Speaking at recent gas conference in Barcelona, Enagas manager Fernando Santamaria said that the company could emulate its own success delivering LNG by truck.
"Quantities are small," Santamaria was quoted as saying referring to current LNG bunker volumes by news agency Interfax.
"But as 30 years ago with [truck-loading of LNG], we want to be the main actor in the development of LNG as a marine fuel," he added.
The company is well position to make such a claim. The company owns five of the seven regasification terminals in Spain. Its Cartagena plant on Spain's east Mediterranean coast could be earmarked to play a role in developing LNG bunkering.
In addition, the company acts as a strategic partner in the European gas sector and has operations in Latin America.
LNG bunkering in Europe is still at the early stages of its development. However, as commentators increasingly talk of a multi-fuel market for bunkering once the 2020 0.5% sulfur cap is in place, LNG could become an established choice for shipping alongside with other alternative bunker fuels.
