U.S.-based Derecktor Shipyards (Derecktor) has announced its newest hybrid vessel project, a battery-powered emission-free catamaran, will provide alternative form of transportation for organic food shipping.

"For approximately 3 voyage hours without recharge, the Organic Market Delivery Vessel can travel emission free on its Lithium battery component," explained Derecktor.

The vessel will feature Derecktor's BAE HybriDrive propulsion system, and will be based on a 19m aluminum Catamaran platform design, which is intended for fuel efficient operation in coastal waters.

Derecktor's third Hybrid Series vessel, Catamaran Organic Market delivery vessel will be able to carry 9,000 pounds of protected refrigerated cargo and 3,000 pounds of deck cargo.

"In an attempt to reduce carbon footprint, Derecktor has teamed up with Harbor Harvest to create an eco-friendly marine coastal network that will integrate a retail space along with the support of the organic farm market in the Connecticut/Long Island Gold Coast and Long Island Sound area," said Derecktor.

"The trade routes have already been tested to confirm the fuel efficiency and battery life, and the vessel will be able to be charged at shore side facilities along its route."

Derecktor explains that trade routes selected under the initiative have been determined based on farm locations, and are intended to decongest roadways to provide "one of the most environmentally sustainable" farm to market systems.

In January, Ship & Bunker reported that Derecktor had announced that the City University of New York and the Science and Resilience Institute had contracted the company to build a hybrid electric propelled research vessel - the second in a series following the completion of the 65 ft research catamaran Spirit of the Sound.
