Matson Navigation Company, Inc. (Matson) today announced that as a result of rising bunker fuel prices and other energy related costs it is to raise its bunker fuel surcharge by 4.5 percentage points effective October 7, 2012.

"While we were encouraged by the moderation of bunker fuel prices earlier this year, that trend has been reversed in recent months," said Dave Hoppes, senior vice president, ocean services, in an emailed statement to customers.

"Since announcing our last decrease in mid-July, bunker fuel prices have risen over 13 percent. Energy related expenses continue to be a significant cost factor for most businesses, as well as consumers, with transportation companies especially hard hit," Hoppes added.

The U.S. Shipping and logistics company said the surcharge for its Hawaii service would rise from 39% to 43.5%, and from 35.5% to 40% for its Guam/Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), and Micronesia services.

The increase follows two consecutive decreases in June and July of 3.5% and 3% respectively, and ends a run of 5 consecutive decreases for the Guam/CNMI and Micronesia services.
