The U.S. Port of San Diego says it is moving forward with plans to install shore power equipment at three berths of its Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal, and the project will go before the Board of Port Commissioners for a public hearing Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

At the hearing, the board will consider issuing a non-appealable coastal development permit for the project, which would allow vessels to use electrical power from San Diego Gas & Electric instead of running their diesel engines while at berth.

The port has issued a document detailing the project and the potential environmental impacts.

The project represents an agreement between the port and its main tenant at the terminal, Dole Fresh Fruit Company (Dole), which recently signed a new long-term lease.

Under the lease agreement, the port will install the power infrastructure while Dole will make vessel-side improvements.

The port said in October that the shore power facilities would reduce emissions and move toward compliance with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Shore Side Power Rule, which requires shore power infrastructure to be in place by the start of 2014.
